GTT: Recycling Year-Round!

So now that Earth Day is over everyone can go back to being lazy slobs right?! WRONG! I get so irritated sometimes around this time of year (and the holidays because people give a damn more) because people start to pretend to care about our Earth (homeless) and then the following week it just stops! Well, it shouldn't!

We have always recycled in some way. For the girls birthday parties I almost always made my own decorations out of materials we already had, or used scrap paper to write down the weeks menu. So I just wanted to give ya'll a little push to continue to care about the place we call home!

We have been taking our recyclables to this drop off box in Pharr, Texas. We do have one in Weslaco, but it's very small, this one is huge and also has a bin inside for glass and plastic bags! I love it! And my girls love to go and help sort.

But I wanted to talk about composting! We started a small compost last summer but really didn't keep an eye on it. We're back at it again. A local city offers free compost and I want to go by sometime to see their production.

What is composting?  decayed organic material used as a plant fertilizer.

Why compost? Once soil is disturbed, we may not be able to restore it to its native state, but we can help build a new balance of beneficial soil organisms to support the desired vegetative life. -

How to compost?  I love this video and share some great information about how to start your own compost! WATCH HERE

There are lots of other great websites with loads of info! Some of my favs:

Check out this video from PlanetGreen with how it's done at a larger scale.

Have you been wanting to compost? Have you started? Feel free to share some tips.

One issue we have is keeping the levels leveled. Sometimes my mom doesn't understand that she can't throw all of the leave on top, lol. I've been wanting to get a compost bin for the kitchen as well as some biodegradable bags, I got some deal hunting to do!

Hickies: Back-to-School Series #1

Every Friday in the month of September I will share a few tips for making the transition for both kids and parents a bit easier. This first one is a doozie! HICKIES! Keep reading to learn what I'm talking about.... I try to buy my girls (i have 3 school-aged daughters) two or more pairs of shoes; an active shoe, which usually has laces, and a more casual/formal shoe, which usually doesn't have laces. Which ones do they choose to wear nearly every day to school? The ones that have shoe laces! Of course my oldes daughter, who's now 13, can tie her own shoes, but the other two still need help. And let's be real, even the oldest one I find myself nagging her to tie her laces correctly, she gets sloppy in the mornings at times. Here come HICKIES to save the day!

Hate tying your kids' shoes everyday before they step out of the house? Hate stopping to tie your own shoes mid-run? HICKIES products turn any pair of sneakers into convenient, comfortable, and stylish slip-on…
