Green Tip Tuesday - Under the Weather

Evening.... we got some sad news this morning. One of my great-uncles was rushed to the hospital. Him and his wife live alone, never had any children and both of their health had been deteriorating lately. Of course, being Hispanic and stubborn, they hardly, if at all, went to the doctor and did not take very good care of themselves or eachother latley. But he would always go to church on Sundays. No one saw him on Sunday. He had fallen, no one knew, so he could not move for at least two days. His wife did not know, or could not see him, or would forget to tell someone. Just a very sad and stressful situation. But they will both be admitted into a nursing home after he gets a bit better at the hospital.

So this evening I had dinner with my grandma and mom after leaving the hospital and we were just talking about how my grandmother was raised and all the "weird" remedies they had when they were younger and I did some research on some of them.

The one that sticks out in my mine is BAKING SODA! My grandma still does this today!

Baking soda for Nausea!

When I was younger we would go over to grandmas house almost every day. Being Hispanic, that is the norm. When you're little, we don't have a babysitter, we have Grandma! So we would play outdoors very often, get sweaty, and then take a bath. Right after our bath, she would give us a spoon of baking soda (about 1/2 tsp) so that we don't get "Resfiado." I'm not to sure what that translates to in English, but it's the same thing as not to go outside with your hair wet. My grandma would also take a spoon herself when she starts feeling sick, when she didn't wear her sweater out to the store or walk outside barefooted.

From LiveStrong.com:
Dissolve one-half tsp. baking soda into four oz. of water . The baking soda acts as a mouth rinse if you don't drink it. If you do choose to drink the baking soda and water, this neutralizes the stomach acid you're experiencing, according to the Life123 website.

And from EarthClinic.com here is the remedy:
Take 1/8 tsp baking soda with a glass of warm water. Nausea should be gone with in minutes.
Best part of this remedy is that it's something that we already have. When I was younger I use to get motion sickness all the time and my mom would give me a spoon and it would go away! Or, I think it would. I was too young to remember.

So, next time you are feeling under the weather, give it a try! Let me know if it works!
