Green Tip Tuesday - Berry Vinaigrette and Uses

Hey couponer friends... how many of you have bottles upon bottles of vinegar? I don't have that many, I had 6, but I gave ones to each of my grandmothers. Now I have 4. Have yours just been collecting dust? But let me tell you, this stuff is great! I have been turning to it for pretty much everything after I learned all of the great uses for it, besides cooking. Yeah, so here comes a list... but not a list of all the uses, the list of what I actually use. And to show you that you can be frugal and stretch your dollars even further! I suggest ya'll check out this website, it's one of the ones where I found most useful and tons of uses, neatly categorized. And scroll down to the end for my new favorite recipe!

  1. Remove mineral deposits from coffee makers with white distilled vinegar. Fill the water reservoir with 1 cup or more of white distilled vinegar and run it through a whole cycle. Run it once or twice more with plain water to rinse clean. (Check the owners’ manual first.)
  2. Clean and deodorize a drain by pouring in 1 cup baking soda, then one cup hot white distilled vinegar. Let this sit for 5 minutes or so, then run hot water down the drain.
  3. Clean counter tops and make them smell sweet again with a cloth soaked in undiluted white distilled vinegar.
  4. To shine chrome sink fixtures that have a lime buildup, use a paste made of 2 tablespoons salt and 1 teaspoon white distilled vinegar.
  5. Stop ants from congregating by pouring white distilled vinegar on the area.
  6. Get cleaner laundry! Add about 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar to the last rinse. The acid in white distilled vinegar is too mild to harm fabrics, yet strong enough to dissolve the alkalies in soaps and detergents. Besides removing soap, white distilled vinegar prevents yellowing, acts as a fabric softener and static cling reducer, and attacks mold and mildew.
  7. Stop insect stings and bites from itching by dabbing them with a cotton ball saturated with undiluted white distilled vinegar.
  8. Make nail polish last longer. Wipe fingernails with cotton balls dipped in white distilled vinegar before putting on nail polish.
  9. Kill fleas by adding a little white distilled vinegar to your dog or cat’s drinking water.

And that's pretty much it.... And yup, i have one bottle left! It's gonna be a sad day when we run out (but I do have apple cider vinegar). And I've been making salads for me almost everyday and this is one of the dressings that I made....

  1. All I use to clean anymore is vinegar-- I love it! What I really love is making lavender scented vinegar to clean with, I cannot wait until summer when my lavender plant is ready to use again. I miss that stuff!
I have also started making my own fabric softener and it calls for vinegar as well. I go through it by the gallons when I can in the summer as well.

Hickies: Back-to-School Series #1

Every Friday in the month of September I will share a few tips for making the transition for both kids and parents a bit easier. This first one is a doozie! HICKIES! Keep reading to learn what I'm talking about.... I try to buy my girls (i have 3 school-aged daughters) two or more pairs of shoes; an active shoe, which usually has laces, and a more casual/formal shoe, which usually doesn't have laces. Which ones do they choose to wear nearly every day to school? The ones that have shoe laces! Of course my oldes daughter, who's now 13, can tie her own shoes, but the other two still need help. And let's be real, even the oldest one I find myself nagging her to tie her laces correctly, she gets sloppy in the mornings at times. Here come HICKIES to save the day!

Hate tying your kids' shoes everyday before they step out of the house? Hate stopping to tie your own shoes mid-run? HICKIES products turn any pair of sneakers into convenient, comfortable, and stylish slip-on…
