Mom-Owned Businesses
by Janice

Have you ever thought about starting a business, or do you own one? Mothers face unique challenges when they are starting and running a company. Whether you're looking into or involved with a home-based business, a franchise, a small- or medium-sized business, or a large-scale company, you also need to juggle another full-time commitment -- raising and caring for your children.

One of the toughest problems that I've had to solve is figuring out how to give adequate attention to my two boys (who are almost one and three years old), while also juggling a full-time job and exploring various business opportunities on the side. While in theory, I'd love to be able to spend all day with the children, and truly admire those moms who are able to do that (including my own mother), my personality makes me want to work and advance in my career; my thought is that a happy mother who is pursuing her passions will be able to set a good example for her children to do the same. I also find it comforting that our kids go to a home daycare where they are able to socialize and learn in a way that I would not be able to teach them myself.

When my first son was born and I was on maternity leave, I learned of the Discovery Toys opportunity. This was a perfect chance for me to explore a home-based business and also be able to access some products for my son's learning and development. As a baby, he would come along to the events and home-parties that I led. Then, once my second son was born, I looked into the Bamboopink jewelry opportunity -- which offers a way for hostesses to have online catalog shows so that I could stay home more. While I am still able to sell both the toys and the jewelry, last year I decided to focus on building a web-based business that would potentially provide a online solution to help other business owners -- and also have the opportunity to expand exponentially and employ more people. The Inkwhy.com website is currently being developed by a local programmer, and will be a new way for people to exchange information, products and services; Inkwhy stands for "I need knowledge, what have you?"

As you think about what business opportunities you've thought about or pursued, how has being a mom helped you get farther or changed the direction of your path? For me, being a mom is an incentive to try to achieve the most that I can, and to help my kids reach their potential as well.

Hickies: Back-to-School Series #1

Every Friday in the month of September I will share a few tips for making the transition for both kids and parents a bit easier. This first one is a doozie! HICKIES! Keep reading to learn what I'm talking about.... I try to buy my girls (i have 3 school-aged daughters) two or more pairs of shoes; an active shoe, which usually has laces, and a more casual/formal shoe, which usually doesn't have laces. Which ones do they choose to wear nearly every day to school? The ones that have shoe laces! Of course my oldes daughter, who's now 13, can tie her own shoes, but the other two still need help. And let's be real, even the oldest one I find myself nagging her to tie her laces correctly, she gets sloppy in the mornings at times. Here come HICKIES to save the day!

Hate tying your kids' shoes everyday before they step out of the house? Hate stopping to tie your own shoes mid-run? HICKIES products turn any pair of sneakers into convenient, comfortable, and stylish slip-on…
