Green Tip Tuesday - Bag Ban

We are closer! This is so exciting for me... The Bag Monster is coming to Brownsville, Texas. Brownsville is about 45 minutes from where I live. He is coming to make a visit because Brownsville is the first state to put a city wide ban on plastic bags! There was many events last year where they gave out reusable bags and educate the public about the ban. It goes into effect tomorrow, January 5th. If you still want to or forget your reusable bags you will be charged $1!
That is incentive enough for me to use a reusable bag. Places like medical offices and dry cleaners won't be included in the ban and anyone who does not comply can face up to $500 in fines. The City of Brownsville put together FAQs, you can view them HERE.

Tomorrow there will be a Commissioners meeting and that's where the Bag Monster will speak and I plan on attending. I want to take some video, not sure if we will be allowed, but I will definitely take some pics!

"We want to have a beautiful city,” Commissioner Edward Camarillo said. “We want to make sure that we take care of the environment."
The ordinance against the so-called “urban tumbleweeds,” which is what they are will hopefully go down and merchants from the big-box national retailers on down are on board with a mix of reusable bags for sale. That's in addition to the tens of thousands of bags given away at community events last year.
“We've got national support for a local cause,” said Rose Timmer, executive director of Healthy Communities of Brownsville, the nonprofit group that championed the ban. Rose has been interviewed by many national TV news and newspapers from around Texas and the States. Brownsville was also contacted by Austin, Texas to see how they can also get everything in order for a ban in that area.
You can read more about the ban here at MySanAntonio.com. You can show your support of the Bag Monster on his blog or by buying a Chico Bag (I have mine). Also stop by Rose Timmer's facebook page and give her and her community a pat on the bag for this huge change!
Here's a video I found in an article:

  2. I love using reusable bags. I have a couple myself, and they work pretty well over plastic any day.

Hickies: Back-to-School Series #1

Every Friday in the month of September I will share a few tips for making the transition for both kids and parents a bit easier. This first one is a doozie! HICKIES! Keep reading to learn what I'm talking about.... I try to buy my girls (i have 3 school-aged daughters) two or more pairs of shoes; an active shoe, which usually has laces, and a more casual/formal shoe, which usually doesn't have laces. Which ones do they choose to wear nearly every day to school? The ones that have shoe laces! Of course my oldes daughter, who's now 13, can tie her own shoes, but the other two still need help. And let's be real, even the oldest one I find myself nagging her to tie her laces correctly, she gets sloppy in the mornings at times. Here come HICKIES to save the day!

Hate tying your kids' shoes everyday before they step out of the house? Hate stopping to tie your own shoes mid-run? HICKIES products turn any pair of sneakers into convenient, comfortable, and stylish slip-on…
