CLOSED - Day 5: Eco in the Kitchen

Photobucket

The other day, I don't remember where I was reading it or where I saw this but we were talking about how... Ohhh, I remember now. Last weeks Change the World Wednesday challenge!! They were talking about "Green Cooking," and one of the comments I read was about using what God gave you to make and serve a family meal (meaning, not using a blender or one of those plastic gadgets!). So when I read that I was on the search for eco-friendly utensils, because I was thinking about my wedding at the time and I was like, I do not want those cheap plastic sporks (although the spork was a good invention), plastic straw and napkin that doesn't clean anything before falling to pieces at "My Wedding!" Usually when I'm searching for something I will search "blogspot.com's" because I trust other blogger moms before the actual company websites. And I found these--------------------->>> (see picture below)
Ecoware biodegradables! (Compostable Birch Wood Cutlery!) Don't tell me this is not awesome! And they go right along with my theme Asian Chic (well, not so much chic) and after use I'll either throw them in our compost bin or even if they get thrown away they will biodegrade. They're also an approved vendor of "The Green Bride Guide." Take a look at this picture, they were actually used in weddings:

So I flocked to their website and took a look at their products. I was almost sure that they were going to be like $3-5 per pack or something like that. But no... they are actually extremely affordable (100 forks: $8.95 plus delivery)! I emailed EcoWare Biodegradables and received a response right away about my inquiry for my wedding. I mean, of course, it's not till next summer, but I love to be prepared.

The representative also let me know that they have plates and bowls at EarthenTrading.com! Jackpot, how awesome is that. Funny thing is that I haven't found anyone to cater my wedding, lol. But we still have time.  The Earthen line of plates, bowls and platters are made from fallen palm leaves, are 100% natural, and a beautiful compliment to the cutlery.

Here's a little more information on this company:

Ecoware Biodegradables supplies FSC-Certified wooden cutlery for restaurants, cafes, schools, weddings, or simply a picnic in the park! Our disposable biodegradable wooden cutlery appeals to those looking for a unique, eco-friendly cutlery alternative to traditional disposable cutlery, at a cost that fits your budget.
We are committed to making it easy for individuals and businesses to make environmentally responsible choices for their disposable cutlery and tableware. Most disposable products are manufactured using non-renewable resources and often recyclable plastic products never make it to the proper recycling facilities. Instead, they end up in landfills, where they never break down.

Ecoware's stylish and hip wooden forks, spoons, and knives from Ecowareproducts.com minimize harmful plastic waste and provide an all natural, eco-friendly cutlery option to replace disposable plastic tableware at a comparable price. Durable and smooth, use them for your next picnic, party, special event, in your cafe or restaurant, or anywhere you choose! With retail packs, pre-packaged cutlery sets, and wholesale bulk cutlery available, Ecoware offers eco-friendly tableware for everyone.
I ordered a few to try out but Ecoware was so excited that I was excited that they wanted to give a pack to one of my readers for this weeks Going Green Event ($15 value)! I LOVE the Earthen trading sweetheart dessert plates!

We have a compost pile! We collect our food waste in a plastic container in the kitchen and I take it out about twice a week. Then in the spring I topdress my vegetable garden.

  15. I follow you via GFC. Unfortunately, I do not compost right now because I live in an apartment in downtown Chicago and have no outdoor space, so it would be very difficult. My favorite product from Earthen is the rectangle platters!

Hickies: Back-to-School Series #1

Every Friday in the month of September I will share a few tips for making the transition for both kids and parents a bit easier. This first one is a doozie! HICKIES! Keep reading to learn what I'm talking about.... I try to buy my girls (i have 3 school-aged daughters) two or more pairs of shoes; an active shoe, which usually has laces, and a more casual/formal shoe, which usually doesn't have laces. Which ones do they choose to wear nearly every day to school? The ones that have shoe laces! Of course my oldes daughter, who's now 13, can tie her own shoes, but the other two still need help. And let's be real, even the oldest one I find myself nagging her to tie her laces correctly, she gets sloppy in the mornings at times. Here come HICKIES to save the day!

Hate tying your kids' shoes everyday before they step out of the house? Hate stopping to tie your own shoes mid-run? HICKIES products turn any pair of sneakers into convenient, comfortable, and stylish slip-on…
