CLOSED - Day 1 - Going Green for 2011 *Fashionista*

Photobucket
Hello! And welcome to Going Green for 2011! I am super excited to share with you all the things you as a Mommy and a family can do to be a bit more Greenier for 2011. It is so easy, you can take small steps and make a huge difference!

I want to start off by saying THANK YOU to Karen from Mommy Times, the host of the event for putting together a group of great moms who are passionate about their environment and their families. And I have to say that ya'll should go by their blogs as well to check out the information that they have to share as well as the great GIVEAWAYS! (hint, you get extra entries for that as well!

Who will participate? I will be heading up the event and I have the pleasure of working with Katie from Diary of Momma, Nancy from Arizona Mama, and of course Karen from Mommy Times.

For today I will just like to share with you !THE RULES! and how I will run the event, every participant is doing it a bit differently. I will offer entries in every "Going Green for 2011" post even if there is no giveaway! If there is no giveaway, tell me which giveaway you'd like them to go towards. Another tidbit, the Extra Entries post will be open until Wednesday, Jan 26 until 11:59 pm! And remember, if you do the Extra Entries they will count towards each giveaway I have. Example. If I have 5 giveaways and you entered 10 extra entries you get 10 in each giveaway! (I know, I am so awesome!)

Alright, alright... enough with all that stuff (did you get confus-ed?)! Today I'd like to talk about how your inner FASHIONISTA can still look awesome and green at the same time!

A few years ago, as I started searching the web on what I can do to be more green, I stumbled upon sites like HipMountainMama and I found Etsy as well! Everyone that I have referred to Etsy has loved it. What does this have to do with being green you say?! Well, I am glad to introduce you to Brown As A Berry, or as I like to call it "BrownsAberry," teehee. Catlin is the artist/jeweler of this Etsy shop. Let's hear what she has to say:
message imagemessage imageBrown as a berry earrings are handmade with recycled vintage jewelry, repurposed bits, vintage beads, & some new materials. My jewelry is inspired by the thrill of treasure hunting & giving new life & beauty to forgotten gems. Reducing our impact on the earth & repurposing versus consuming is plenty of motivation for me to create little handmade things. Life as we know it has become mass produced & uniform. I believe in things handmade, things with soul, & things with heart. As for the name… when I was three, Fergie, the Duchess of York, told me I was “brown as a berry”. Show compassion, foster creativity, live simply, & enjoy!

Aren't those lovely words?! But she is right... I am saddened with the words "forgotten gems." I am so sappy when it comes to nature and sunsets. Just this weekend we took a walk to our local outdoor market and there were some beautiful lava rocks and they were just covered by tall grass and weeds. Instead of "featuring" them, they were just pushed aside. *tear* But Catlin is totally right, that is enough motivation for creating something beautiful out of something that was once "forgotten." Take a look at her shop, if I had to choose one.... I couldn't! They are all one of a kind peices that I bet no one has ever seen before (unless they are an Etsy fanatic like me). So there are so many jewleres who have began incorporating vintage or used peices into their "NEW" pieces.

Here are some additional suggestions if you really don't want to buy. A few years ago I made my own jewelry from some old jewelry that I had and didn't wear anymore. It was so easy and fun. This past Christmas I gave my *Fashionista* cousins some georgeous upcycled earings and bracelets made from yarn!  I used the frame of a sanitized (with vinegar or alcohol) earring and just took three pieces of yard I had left over from crafting , made a braid and them wrapped them around the circular frame! They were "Hot, Funky" earrings!

What if I'm not into jewlery? If you're not, how about hair accessories, broaches, belts, even socks and clothing! Yup, clothing to. Etsy artists like PaintedOyster & MountainGirl make adorable T-Shirt dresses out of old frumpy tees!

So now let's talk about how you can get your own pair of Catlin's creations from Brown As A Berry.

Ungrateful during Thanksgiving?

Hubby made me cry on Thanksgiving.... The usual share what you're thankful for, he just went all out talking about how we had one of the toughest years and we were apart from each other for six months and how much he missed us and it just sucked. Ohhhh, the waterfalls!! But yeah, it was the longest year ever. Speaking of Thanksgiving.... HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Reminds me of something that's been on my mind....

We just moved out of the valley and guess what?! The worst part moving to a new place was not the moving. Before we moved I scoped out our neighborhood, grocery stores, parks and I joined several mom groups. I knew negative Nancy’s were bound to share their troubles in Facebook groups but I’ve never heard so many complaints in one day.

I don’t know what it is but I don’t like when people complain. I just think to myself, “Did you really have to share that?” or about an easy solution to that complaint. There would have been a better way to spend your time than writing a n…
