Green Tip Tuesday - Save Electiricity by Sunning

Good evening, thank you for visiting The Mommy Blog if you are here from Green Blog Hop. I hope you enjoy my blog and if you ever want to contact me for information or give me a green tip for Green Tip Tuesday, please feel free to leave a comment or shoot me an email with your tip.

This weeks tip is all about "SUNNING." What is sunning? Does it really work? How much will it save me?

To answer the first question, sunning is when you place you clothes, specifically, cloth diapers, out in the sun to dry and the sun will remove those nasty stains. Even before I started using cloth diapers I would lay my whites and hang sheets on the line to get nice and bright.

Does it work? Of course, it toally works. It has to do with the power of ultra violet radiation, you know, the thing that causes skin cancer. The sun is so powerful that it breaks apart the molecular structure of the "stain" and changes the way the color is reflected back and makes our whites whiter. And when left in the sun long enough it will actually kill the bacteria while it brightens. You can do this this with other things besides clothes. You can freshen up rugs, trashcans, and even the yellow pages of your favorite reading book!

Now lets talk numbers here. Each washer uses a different amount of kW, but for the sake of using a nice round numer, lets say your dryer uses 10kW per hour and you were to use your dryer for an hour 5 times a week, that's 50kW a week. And then how much do you pay 15 cents per kW, so that's $7.50 a week. You would save almost $400 a year if you didn't use your dryer at all. But lets say you only used it half the time, so you'd save about $200 a year... that to me is an awesome save. Then think, the less you use your dryer the more you add to it's life's expectancy. And guess what else?! You get more life out of your clothes to. It's proven that clothes get more wear and tear when using a dryer to dry. So, yes, it will save you a good amount each month on your electricity bill.

So, think about it. Saving money, having cleaner clothes and getting your whites white, is it worth it? Try sunning a few times a week and check your next months electricity bill. I take my girls outside with me when I go out to hang up clothes and that's their daily exercise as well as mommies to. Also an excuse to wear my cute sun glasses and sun hat.

Enjoy the sun!

Hickies: Back-to-School Series #1

Every Friday in the month of September I will share a few tips for making the transition for both kids and parents a bit easier. This first one is a doozie! HICKIES! Keep reading to learn what I'm talking about.... I try to buy my girls (i have 3 school-aged daughters) two or more pairs of shoes; an active shoe, which usually has laces, and a more casual/formal shoe, which usually doesn't have laces. Which ones do they choose to wear nearly every day to school? The ones that have shoe laces! Of course my oldes daughter, who's now 13, can tie her own shoes, but the other two still need help. And let's be real, even the oldest one I find myself nagging her to tie her laces correctly, she gets sloppy in the mornings at times. Here come HICKIES to save the day!

Hate tying your kids' shoes everyday before they step out of the house? Hate stopping to tie your own shoes mid-run? HICKIES products turn any pair of sneakers into convenient, comfortable, and stylish slip-on…
