Green Tip Tuesday - Barbies Birthday

Did you know today is the official 50th Anniversary of Barbie? She was released on March 9th, 1959. Barbie is the one toy that almost 90% of girls want atleast once in their life. I have never bought my daughter a Barbie doll. It sounds sad, but I have bought her barbies from thrift store and then I buy barbie clothes from and she looks as good as new.

It annoys me when I see parents buy like 10 Barbies all at ones. They are plastic dolls tied at the head, arms, legs with plastic to a box also wrapped in plastic made in China and then has to be shipped to the USA by a big 18-wheeler that emits tons of gases to be put up on a shelf that will probably be sold that day and then go home in a plastic bag to be opened by a eager little girl who will just end up throwing all the wrapping and eventually the doll in the trash!

Was that all one sentence? WOW, I amaze myself sometimes. So obviously my green tip this week is not to deprive your children of plastic toys, but to not buy new ones! There are tons out there that need some love.

I met Cherry (I love her name) at the flea martket last summer at a flea market while I was shopping for my daughter birthday and Christmas gifts! She is a seamstress and she buys old tattered dolls and barbies and fixes their clothes or uses it to make new clothes for barbies and then sells them to family and friends for only $5. She says she doesn't do it for the money, she does it to help out the world and save her family and friends money and they love her for it she says. The best part is the girls that get these dolls love them and show off their unique Barbie doll! I thought that was an amazing story. She also told me that she has another friend that buys Barbie clothes to make teenage fashionable totes and tees made out of the Barbie clothes! That is cool and a great idea.

So celebrate Barbie's 50th Birthday by donating your old barbies or making something new with the clothes.

Hickies: Back-to-School Series #1

Every Friday in the month of September I will share a few tips for making the transition for both kids and parents a bit easier. This first one is a doozie! HICKIES! Keep reading to learn what I'm talking about.... I try to buy my girls (i have 3 school-aged daughters) two or more pairs of shoes; an active shoe, which usually has laces, and a more casual/formal shoe, which usually doesn't have laces. Which ones do they choose to wear nearly every day to school? The ones that have shoe laces! Of course my oldes daughter, who's now 13, can tie her own shoes, but the other two still need help. And let's be real, even the oldest one I find myself nagging her to tie her laces correctly, she gets sloppy in the mornings at times. Here come HICKIES to save the day!

Hate tying your kids' shoes everyday before they step out of the house? Hate stopping to tie your own shoes mid-run? HICKIES products turn any pair of sneakers into convenient, comfortable, and stylish slip-on…
