As mommies there are always times in our lives when we just can't give our children what they need. This happened to us two Christmas's ago.... my husband was laid off. I was also pregnant with our second child. There were also other things going on that just made the situation a whole lot worse. I wasn't firm on cloth diapering, but I was so interested. I bought some regular prefolds and didn't like that they were so flat and stiff. I was a cloth diapering virgin! I had no idea what I was doing.

I didn't know about the Cloth Diaper Foundation so the first place I turned to was to FreeCycle. A very nice lady a few towns away from me gave me all of her newborn fitted diapers and some Gerber vinyl covers. She made them herself. But little did I know that I was going to have a "normal" size baby, 8lbs 10oz. Those only fit her for the first few weeks!

The next place I turned to was a website I had learned about from a friend on the CafeMom website.... WishUponAHero.com. Anyone can make a wish as well as grant a wish. I received a few more prefolds and snappis from a few heroes. By then I had done some contract jobs and we were good for a few more months. I became addicted to buying seconds from Thirsties Outlet Store. We only spend about $150 for all of our cloth diapers and accessories (including detergent) and we are able to use cloth diapers 24/7 thanks to all the generous people out there!

So for all of you mommies who are thinking about using cloth diapers but think it is too expensive.... YOU CAN FIND A WAY! We did and I am so happy that we are using cloth diapers. I wish I could tell all of the mommies out there about all the different ways I've saved and that it's completely doable and affordable!

Thanks to Happily Domestic for hosting Fluff Talk Thursdays!

  1. It is always that first start up cost that is the kicker. But yes, there are ways. For me...I had some money from my baby shower and bought some clearance Haute Pockets from Nicki's diapers. Then I bought a diaper here and there when we would get paid. It really did not take long to get a normal sized stash for my baby.

I think it is great that there are places like the Cloth Diaper Foundation out there though for those woman who need the extra help. I looked into myself at the time but knew I would want to keep the diapers for any babies we have in the future. But that is just me. I hate borrowing stuff. I don't even like to check out books to read at the library. I'm weird like that. I want to keep things for myself! :-)

Thanks for joining in again...it was feeling lonely over here. :-(

Hickies: Back-to-School Series #1

Every Friday in the month of September I will share a few tips for making the transition for both kids and parents a bit easier. This first one is a doozie! HICKIES! Keep reading to learn what I'm talking about.... I try to buy my girls (i have 3 school-aged daughters) two or more pairs of shoes; an active shoe, which usually has laces, and a more casual/formal shoe, which usually doesn't have laces. Which ones do they choose to wear nearly every day to school? The ones that have shoe laces! Of course my oldes daughter, who's now 13, can tie her own shoes, but the other two still need help. And let's be real, even the oldest one I find myself nagging her to tie her laces correctly, she gets sloppy in the mornings at times. Here come HICKIES to save the day!

Hate tying your kids' shoes everyday before they step out of the house? Hate stopping to tie your own shoes mid-run? HICKIES products turn any pair of sneakers into convenient, comfortable, and stylish slip-on…
